World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz took to the US Open courts for their practice sessions on Wednesday. Both players are coming off hard-fought four-set wins in the opening round of the American Grand Slam.

As Alcaraz took the court first, he had a friendly exchange with Sinner before starting his practice. The current Wimbledon champion was seen practicing with his brother, Alvaro Alcaraz.

Both Sinner and Alcaraz are in the same half of the draw for the third successive Grand Slam. They recently met in the Roland Garros semifinals, where Alcaraz won a highly entertaining five-set match before claiming the title.

Watch out Jannik, this one serves better than you.

The formidable duo has faced each other at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon so far in their careers. However, their potential US Open semifinal would be one of the most hyped matches in the tournament’s recent history.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz battle for the World No.1 ranking

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will take their battle for the World No. 1 ranking to the US Open. The Italian is currently World No. 1 with 9,360 points, while the Spaniard is behind at No.3 with 7,360 points.

Sinner was initially at 9,760 points after winning the Masters 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open. However, the recent doping controversy resulted in a 400-point deduction from his ranking. These 400 points were earned due to his semifinal performance at Indian Wells, where he lost to Alcaraz.

Sinner is the heavy favorite to maintain his World No. 1 ranking beyond the US Open, as he only has 180 points to defend this year. Last year, the 23-year-old lost in the Round of 16 to Alexander Zverev. On the other hand, Alcaraz has 720 points to defend at Flushing Meadows. His title defense last year came to a halt after a four-set loss to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
