Michigan State University holds remembrance day a year after campus shooting

Publish date: 2024-07-27

Members of the Michigan State University community - both on campus and across the state, nation and world - are invited for a day of remembrance, one year after a tragic fatal shooting.

A gunman, who was not a student, opened fire at two locations on campus Feb. 13, 2023, killing three students and injuring five others.

Events and activities are planned for Feb. 13, 2024 to provide individuals an opportunity to reflect, grieve and honor those lost, injured, and impacted by the tragedy.

The following events, hosted by the Office for Resource and Support Coordination, are optional for students.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Reflective Spaces

To provide a safe environment for individual reflection by members of our community, reflective spaces will be available at locations across campus and the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. These spaces will be staffed by crisis counselors for those seeking additional emotional support.

9 a.m.-8 p.m. Reflective Space

Religious leaders representing the spectrum of denominational beliefs will be present throughout the day for those who express a need for support. Crisis counselors will also be present from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Healing Through Kindness and Service

Kindness activities like writing notes of support and gift-making to keep personally or share with others will be available at both locations.

Service activities will only be available at the Hannah Community Center. Activities include packaging supply kits for K-12 students and families for Lansing and East Lansing Public Schools, Edgewood Village and the MSU Student Parent Resource Center, and decorating brown sack lunch bags for Kids Food Basket.

Free shuttles will run between the International Center south entrance and Hannah Community Center from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. to facilitate participation by community members who do not wish to drive or walk between sites. Registration is not required but is encouraged.

7:30-9:30 p.m. Remembrance Gathering

This gathering is open to all. Opportunities to engage include participating in a shared community art creation, communing with one another and providing feedback around the permanent memorial planning effort.

A short program will begin around 8:10 p.m. with a prerecorded reflective message, playing of MSU Shadows, moments of silence and ringing of the Beaumont Tower bells at 8:18 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. A livestream of the program will begin around 8 p.m.

Also during this time, Berkey Hall and the MSU Union will be lit up green.

8 p.m. Luminary Lighting

Spartans around the globe are invited to join each other in lighting a luminary to participate in our remembrance gathering from wherever they are that evening.

Luminaries have been shared with alumni chapters across the country and can be picked up while supplies last on the main MSU campus or throughout the East Lansing community from Feb. 5-13, 2024.

For more information on the above events, visit the Spartans Together website.

For most students there will be no classes Tuesday with no exams or assignments due.
