It's a big day for animal lovers in the Treasure Valley.

The Idaho Humane Society moved into its new facility off Overland Road on Bird Street which has been years in the planning.

The Idaho Humane Society is one of the biggest humane societies in the Northwest and they've finally got a new 42,000 square-foot building to call home.

Monday was moving day for some 40 dogs and 30 cats, moved from the Humane Society's old location on West Dorman Street near the Boise Airport where conditions have been cramped for long as many can remember.

"So we're definitely splitting out services," said Humane Society communications manager Kristine Schellhass. "So for most of the public, they will go to our new shelter and veterinary center . So any public needs will take place at Bird Street all adoptions take place at Bird Street."

The new location is a $15 million state of the art facility, featuring dormitories (yes that's what they call them) that will provide more room for the animalS but also spread the population out which will make for a healthier, less congested environment.

Things will still be happening at the old site...such as animal control operations.

And it's at the old location strays and other incoming dogs will be prepared for transfer to the new shelter.
