How the Mahoney House helps prevent child abuse
BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — To mark child abuse prevention month, CBS2 is highlighting the work of local organizations. The Mahoney House is a nonprofit providing assistance and a 24-hour support line for victims.
"To give an example, if a child discloses something and the first place that they go is the hospital...our local hospital will reach out to the Mahoney House. An advocate will respond to that situation and assists from that point forward...if the survivors and family would like us to be involved," says Service Coordinator Advocate Pam Martinez.
They agree we all must all play a role to care for the child and stop the abuse.
"Start by believing children, when a child comes to you and discloses something, just believe them. Communicate to them that you care about them, you're a safe adult and that alone is just too powerful," says Program Specialist Johnna Baer.
